Régis Wargnier (born April 18, 1948 in Paris ) is a French film director , screenwriter and film producer .

biography

Régis Wargnier began his career in cinema in 1972 as an assistant director on the drama The Unknown Beauty by Michel Deville . In the same position he was involved in Patrice Lecontes Viens chez moi, j'habite chez une copine (1981) and Francis Girod's The Banker's Wife (1980), The Big Brother (1982) and Le bon Plaisir - A Political Love Affair (1984). He made his first own film, The Woman of My Life , in 1986. The drama tells the story of a well-known concert violinist (played by Christophe Malavoy ) who is addicted to alcohol and in 1987 brought Wargnier the César for best first work .

For his next feature film Das Schloß belongs to me (1989) based on the novel I am the KIng of the Castle by the English author Susan Hill , he won Jean Rochefort and Dominique Blanc , who had already played a supporting role in Wargnier's directorial debut. Blanc plays the single mother, Madame Vernet, who is hired by the castle owner and widower Monsieur Bréaud (Rochefort) to look after his son during the holidays. However, the latter sees the newcomers as intruders.

The great success came for Régis Wargnier in the 1990s, in which he made a name for himself with large-scale historical epics. The film Indochine (1992) with Catherine Deneuve , Vincent Perez , Linh Dan Pham and Dominique Blanc was understood by international critics as the French counterpart to Victor Fleming's Gone with the Wind (1939) and won the 1993 Oscar for best foreign language film production of the year and five Césars. While Indochine was still playing against the background of French imperialism in Southeast Asia , Wargnier in Est-Ouest - Eine Liebe in Russland focused on a group of Russian immigrants whose return to Stalinist Russia turned out to be a fatal decision. The film, with Sandrine Bonnaire and Catherine Deneuve, was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2000, but was defeated by Pedro Almodóvar's All About My Mother . This was followed in 2005 by Wargnier's first English-language production Man to Man with Joseph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas . Conceived similarly to the two previous large-scale productions, the film opened the Berlin Film Festival in 2005 , but turned out to be an artistic and financial mistake.

In 2007 the French director, who among other things also directed sports documentaries ( Coeurs d'Athlètes with Haile Gebrselassie , 2002), returned to the big screen with Pars vite et reviens tard . The thriller is the film adaptation of Fred Vargas ' award-winning detective novel Fliehe Far und Schnell , for which he has won over famous actors such as José Garcia , Marie Gillain , Lucas Belvaux , Michel Serrault , Charlotte Gainsbourg and Linh Dan Pham . As an actor, Wargnier made guest appearances in The Unknown Beauty (1972) and Souvenirs souvenirs (1984). Since 2007 Wargnier has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, succeeding Henri Verneuil .
