Elbe tunnel marathon
The Elbtunnel Marathon is a marathon that took place every January in Hamburg from 2000 to 2009 . The running track is located in the Old Elbe Tunnel from Hamburg-Sankt Pauli , and therefore completely underground .
Running route and participants
48 laps and an additional piece of 396.6 m are run. One round leads through both tunnels and is 870.8 m long. At the ends of the tunnel the course climbs slightly, so that a total of around 150 meters in altitude has to be mastered. The route has been measured since 2004 according to the guidelines of the DLV .
Due to the limited capacity of the route and the escape routes, the run is limited to 280 participants.
history
The Elbtunnel Marathon was started by Christian Hottas in 2000 and was the first completely underground marathon. Hottas headed the Elbe Tunnel Marathon from 2000 to 2005. His successor is Hans-Joachim Meyer. The organizer is the 100 Marathon Club Deutschland (100MC), an association of runners who have covered at least 100 times the marathon distance of 42.195 km.
Due to renovation work on the tunnel tubes of the Elbe Tunnel, the Elbe Tunnel Marathon was canceled from 2010 to 2018. The Elbe Tunnel Marathon was held once again on June 2, 2019. 201 marathon runners (out of 229 registered) crossed the finish line (164 men and 37 women).
In the following years it cannot take place again due to the continuation of the renovation work. As far as we know today, a new edition is possible from 2025.
