Underground marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The underground marathon (official name Untertage-Sparkassen-Marathon ) was a marathon in Sondershausen , which took place from 2002 to 2014 700 m underground in the Brügman shaft of the adventure mine "Glückauf" (since 2003 in December). It was organized by sc im.puls erfurt eV and SV Glückauf Sondershausen eV and hosted by SV Kristalllauf eV .

The marathon was completed on a circuit of 10.5 km and featured a strongly profiled terrain with a difference in altitude of 310 m per lap. There were inclines and declines of up to 20% on the route. The temperatures ranged between 22 and 31 ° C (depending on the altitude and fresh air supply of the respective route section). The air humidity sometimes fell well below 30%. The marathon runners were therefore required to perform well, both physically and mentally, which only very well trained runners should face. The walkways could be used by trucks and were therefore around 5 meters wide and 4 meters high, even in the narrowest places.

All participants were required to wear helmets. The ground was uneven, smooth and dusty. Due to poor lighting, the ground could not be seen on parts of the route. Therefore, lamps were recommended to run. There was a time limit of 2:45 hours for the half marathon mark. If they were exceeded, the runners were taken out of the race and counted for the half marathon.

The field of participants was limited to 400 runners due to the limited capacity. In recent years the run was booked out months in advance.

The underground marathon follows the tradition of the crystal run over 10 km, organized annually by the same organizers , which started at the same location for the first time on December 12, 1998 and was the first underground running event to be included in the Guinness Book of Records .

Before the current event, the Dane Chris Madsen organized an underground marathon in Sondershausen as the first mining marathon worldwide in March 2001 , with 30 marathon and five half marathon runners and the Dane Kim Michaelsen in 3:20:22 h as the fastest runner, and in October 2001 by Christian Hottas for the 100 Marathon Club Germany of the e. V. the NetCASE Underground Marathon , with 43 marathon finishers, Markus Berger in 3:29:54 h as the fastest runner and Barbara Szlachetka in 4:18:15 h as the fastest runner.
