Maximilian von Puttkamer

Albert August Maximilian von Puttkamer (born June 28, 1831 in Groß Nossin , Stolp district , † March 5, 1906 in Baden-Baden ) was a German politician and State Secretary in the Ministry for Alsace-Lorraine of the German Empire .

origin

He came from the Puttkamer family, which was originally from Pomerania . His father Albert von Puttkamer (* 1797, † 1861) was a Prussian district administrator and from 1859 to 1861 a member of the Prussian House of Representatives.

After attending grammar school in Stettin , Maximilian von Puttkamer studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Berlin from 1849 to 1852 .

In 1852 he joined the Prussian judicial service as an auscultator . In 1858 he was first judge and then in 1861 district judge in Fraustadt ( province of Posen ).

Political career

Member of the Reichstag

In 1867 he was elected as a representative of Fraustadt as a member of the Prussian House of Representatives, to which he belonged until 1871. In 1867 he became a member of the North German Reichstag for the constituency administrative district Posen 6 (Fraustadt - Lissa) and joined the faction of the National Liberals. After the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, he was elected a member of the Reichstag . There he represented the interests of the National Liberal Party (NLP) founded in 1867 until 1881 .

Promotion to State Secretary for Alsace-Lorraine

After the creation of an independent administration for Alsace-Lorraine on July 1, 1876 by the newly established Reich Office, he was initially a judge of appeals in Colmar . A year later he was appointed general advocate of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine .

In 1879 he was appointed Undersecretary of State for Justice and Culture in the Ministry for Alsace-Lorraine . He held this office until 1887.

In 1887, he succeeded Karl von Hofmann himself as State Secretary for Alsace-Lorraine. He held this office for fourteen years until July 1901 and was thus longer in office than any of his predecessors and successors. He was succeeded by Ernst Matthias von Köller .

His wife Alberta von Puttkamer was a writer and has worked as a translator for Alfred de Musset , through the historical drama Kaiser Otto III. and their seals made a name for themselves.
