Ellinor from Puttkamer
Ellinor von Puttkamer (* July 18, 1910 in Versin , district of Rummelsburg i. Pom. , † November 13, 1999 in Bonn ; full name Ellinor Helene Ottony Erna von Puttkamer ) was a German diplomat and historian . From January 20, 1969 to 1974, she was the head of the German representation at the Council of Europe as ambassador .
Life and accomplishments
Ellinor von Puttkamer was born as the seventh and youngest child of the General Landschaftsrat and landowner Andreas von Puttkamer and his wife Elsbeth von Puttkamer, nee. von Zitzewitz , born. The Puttkamer family is one of the oldest noble families in Pomerania . Ellinor von Puttkamer studied from 1930 to 1936 history and in 1936 with the dissertation France, Russia and the Polish throne in 1733 to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1936 to 1945 she worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Berlin. On the side she studied law in Berlin from 1940 to 1942 , but was unable to complete this degree.
After the Second World War, she worked for a short time as a teacher at the University of Heidelberg , as a faculty assistant at the University of Mainz , as a civil servant in the administration of the United Economic Area and in the Federal Ministry of Justice .
In 1953 she joined the Foreign Service . From 1969 until her retirement in 1974 she was ambassador and head of the German representation at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg . She was the first ambassador in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In addition to her main occupation, Ellinor von Puttkamer continued to work as a historian. In 1951 she qualified as a professor at the University of Bonn with her work The Polish National Democracy, published in 1944, and received the Venia Legendi for Comparative Constitutional History and Eastern European History. In 1963 she was appointed adjunct professor. Among other things, she wrote works on the history of Pomerania . From 1976 to 1987 she was part of the editorial team of the Baltic Studies , where she published numerous book reviews, especially - aided by her good knowledge of Polish - about Polish-language writings.
In 1968 she was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.
