occupation

The tragic comedy Whiskey with Vodka is a German film by Andreas Dresen . It was Dresen's most elaborate film to date; the official German cinema release was on September 3, 2009.

action

Otto Kullberg is a famous actor who occasionally drinks too much. When he got drunk while shooting his new 1920s film “Tango for Three” and fell in front of the camera, the production fears that he could be completely absent because of his alcohol problem, especially since a film with him has not been made for this reason could be completed. That's why they hire the younger actor Arno Runge, with whom all scenes are to be shot a second time to be on the safe side. Kullberg has to assert his role against Runge. His partner in “Film in Film” is Bettina Moll, his ex-partner in real life. Now she is the wife of the overwhelmed director Martin Telleck. Not only does Kullberg have to fight in the film and duel with Runge, things get mixed up in real life too. In a key scene, Telleck replied to the question about the message of the film: “The message may not even exist. You don't make a film because you know, but to find out something. The film is guesswork. It's about always new images for the things that keep repeating themselves, the great phenomena: love, death and the weather. "

production

Kurhaus Binz: This is where the filming of “Film in Film” took place.

Film idea

When asked why all the scenes are shot twice, the director Andreas Dresen describes the idea for the film as follows: “On the train ride from the Lünen Cinema Festival, where we presented Sommer in front of the balcony , back to Berlin, my screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhaase told me about this strange one Stair joke of film history. I knew that from the theater, but in the case of film it is unique. I never thought that it really existed. I spoke to Kurt Maetzig , the director of the DEFA two-part film ' Schlösser & Katen ' from 1957 . He told me that he did it for purely pedagogical reasons, so to speak to lead his leading actor, who was devoted to alcohol, back to the path of virtue, which is said to have succeeded to some extent. But that was only the suggestion for 'whiskey with vodka'. "

Frank Beyer , who was Kurt Maetzig's assistant director in 1956, told his friend Kohlhaase that the DEFA main actor Raimund Schelcher was constantly absent from the filming at the time due to alcohol problems. That is why the actor Hans Hardt-Hardtloff was hired for 23 days of shooting .

Locations

The main location for the exterior shots was the Kurhaus Binz on Rügen , the interior shots in the Kurhaussaal took place in the vacant Parkhotel Weißer Hirsch in Dresden . The trailer park was built on the beach at Prerow on the Darß . The studio recordings took place in the Babelsberg studio in Potsdam . The excursion scene was created around the “Weißer Schwan” inn in Hohenschöpping , a district of Velten .

Reviews

Andreas Dresen at the presentation of the film at the 44th  International Film Festival Karlovy Vary in Carlsbad .

“Melancholic tragic comedy with a grandiose ensemble of actors and precise dialogues about the transience of dreams, big and small life lies and the love of filmmaking. As always, Dresen treats his characters with great tenderness, but is admittedly too friendly and indecisive at times, so that the film, as a possible satire on the film business, remains without too much bite. "

" Whiskey with Vodka by Andreas Dresen is a loving, melancholy comedy about filmmaking."

- Birgit Glombitza : The time

"A melancholy tragic comedy about the transience of dreams, big and small life lies and the love of filmmaking."

- Margret Koehler : BR online

" Whiskey with vodka prances with a perfect balance between the genres and performs a very famous ensemble of ideally cast actors."
