Solo Sunny is a film drama produced by the DEFA studio for feature films, production group “Babelsberg”, directed by Konrad Wolf in 1980.

action

The former worker Ingrid, "Sunny", has - it seems - made it. She tours as a pop singer with a band and other artists through the villages and performs in clubhouses and at festivals. However, that doesn't satisfy her and she doesn't get along with her life in her private life either. The taxi driver Harry adores her and would like to marry her. But his attitude to "make a quick mark" doesn't appeal to her. She has an affair with the philosopher Ralph, who besides Sunny has another affair with another woman. With her colleague Norbert, she has to defend herself against stalking. The only one who stands by her is her friend and former colleague Christine. When a quarrel with Norbert escalates and the stupid conférencier and head of the group insults Sunny, Sunny is thrown out of the band. She returns to her old job, but soon quits. Sunny doesn't give up and starts rehearsing with a new, young band.

History of origin

Solo Sunny is Konrad Wolf's last feature film . He was supported by the screenwriter and co-director Wolfgang Kohlhaase . Critics praised the film about an outsider and her demands on life, but also criticized the (supposed) happy ending . The excellent performance of the ensemble and the crew was highlighted .

The real basis of the film is the life story of Sanije Torka . Wolfgang Kohlhaase had heard of an interview that journalist Jutta Voigt had with her in 1976, but which was never published during the GDR era. Sanije Torka is not mentioned in the film, but Jutta Voigt is mentioned as a consultant in the opening credits. In her documentary Solo für Sanije , released in 2009, the director Alexandra Czok reports on the real story of 'Solo Sunny'.

Some of the supporting roles in the film were prominently cast. Sun played Renate Krößners significant Bernd Stegemann to Detlef, the first solo dancer of FriedrichstadtPalast Rolf pan stone in one of his few film roles to Ernesto and Director Lothar Warneke the tappers. Klaus Brasch , who played Norbert, died a few weeks after the film premiere.

The interior shots of Sunny's apartment were shot in a demolished building on Malmöer Strasse, as journalist Regine Sylvester noted in a report on the shooting: “In Malmöer Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg , the shooting team found the space and atmosphere for singer Sunny, the area stands up Demolition. This kind of Berlin won't be around for a long time ”. Another location was an unrenovated tenement at Copenhagener Strasse 13. The departures and arrivals to and from Sunny's apartment with her admirer Harry are filmed in Gleimstrasse, as can be seen from the subway bridge and the Gethsemane Church in the background . In the film, Sunny and Ralph talk about what it is like in the GDR to consciously stay in an unrenovated old building and not move to a new prefabricated building . In addition, the film was shot in Nauen in today's Brandenburg .

The soundtrack for the film was created in collaboration between the musician and composer Günther Fischer and the jazz singer Regine Dobberschütz , who sings all of the songs by the pop singer played by Renate Krößner in the film. The soundtrack for Solo Sunny was Dobberschütz 'greatest success. The Molly Sisters also starred in the film .

The GDR premiere of the film took place on January 8, 1980, in the FRG the film started on April 10, 1980. The television first broadcast was on GDR television on September 6, 1982, on the television of the Federal Republic of Germany on March 26 1983 on ZDF.

Reviews

“There are questions that are worth asking from a certain (high) level of artistic quality onwards. Here the question is worthwhile. Here, above all else, it is worthwhile and, with pleasure and emphasis, the film. And it is also worth a second, even multiple viewing "

- Günter Agde : Filmspiegel , 4/1980, p. 12 f.

“A film about the identity problems of the youth not only in the GDR; differentiated in the character drawing, with accurate dialogues, cheerful and lightly staged. At the same time, a courageous plea against social tutelage, for individuality and your own way through life. "

At the Berlinale 1980 received Solo Sunny the FIPRESCI Prize (film critic price) and Renate Krößner a Silver Bear as best actress.
