Fred Düren (born December 2, 1928 in Berlin ; † March 2, 2015 in Jerusalem , Israel ) was a German theater and film actor .

Life

Düren was the son of a Berlin working-class family and, after the Second World War, was given the opportunity to attend the German Theater's drama school from 1945 to 1947 , which was under Soviet occupation administration . He completed an apprenticeship at the drama school "Der Kreis" (Fritz Kirchhoff School). This was followed by engagements in Potsdam and later in Ludwigslust , Wismar and Schwerin . The beginning of the 1950s he joined the Berliner Ensemble of Bertolt Brecht in East Berlin . From 1958 to 1988 he worked at the Deutsches Theater Berlin.

He played “Mephisto”, “Don Juan”, “Burgess Schippel”, “King Lear”, “Shylock” and had great success as Trygaios in The Peace of Aristophanes in the adaptation of Peter Hacks and in Oedipus Tyrann .

From the mid-1950s, Düren also worked as an actor in films. He had many roles in political DEFA films; For example, he played the communist Pepp in They called him Amigo from 1959. He also played in films such as Goya - or the terrible path of knowledge or Captain Florian von der Mühle .

Düren also worked as a speaker in radio plays and synchronizations . He lent his voice to Jiří Vršťala , among others , when his accent did not fit the role. On May 1, 2008 he was made an honorary member of the Deutsches Theater Berlin.

In 1988 Düren converted to the Jewish faith and left the GDR for Israel. He said goodbye to the acting profession and learned Hebrew .

Fred Düren lived from 1988 and until his death in Israel , where he worked as a rabbi , and in Berlin. The funeral was held on March 3, 2015 on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem .

He was married to the actress Irmgard Düren from 1949 to 1954 .
