Friedo Solter

Friedo Solter , also Frido Solter , (born July 24, 1932 in Reppen , Weststernberg district ) is a German actor and director .

Life

Friedo Solter completed an acting training at the State Drama School Berlin in Berlin-Schöneweide . During his student days he was a directing intern with Bertolt Brecht at the Berliner Ensemble . These experiences shaped Solter's own later staging style .

After completing his training, Solter first went to Horst Schönemann at the miners' theater in Senftenberg in 1955 . From 1956 to 1959 he was a member of the Meininger Theater ensemble . There he played, among others, Macheath in The Threepenny Opera by Brecht and Kurt Weill . In 1959, under the direction of Wolfgang Langhoff , Solter was engaged at the German Theater in Berlin. Solter worked there from 1959 to 1970, then again from 1972 to 2001 as an actor and director. Under the management of Dieter Mann , he was artistic director and chief dramaturge at the Deutsches Theater from 1984 to 1991 . From 1970 to 1972 he worked as a director and dramaturge for German television broadcasting .

In 1961 he took over the role of the upper chamber in the accomplice of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , 1962 saw the title role in William Tell by Friedrich Schiller . Other roles included King Claudius in Hamlet by William Shakespeare and the Councilor Podkelessin in Nikolai Gogol's The Marriage .

From 1964 Solter also worked regularly as a director at the Deutsches Theater. Important productions by Solter were The Deputy by Rolf Hochhuth , Nathan the Wise by Lessing (both 1966, Nathan again in 1987), Amphitryon (1972) by Peter Hacks , King Lear (1976) and Der Sturm (1974) by Shakespeare, Torquato Tasso ( 1975) by Goethe and Life a dream by Calderón . Later productions were Old Masters based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard in 1997 and Sensitive Balance by Edward Albee in 1998 .

From 1976 Solter could also work in the West. From 1978 to 1980 he directed at the Schauspiel Bonn . Under his direction there were productions of The Visit of the Old Lady by Friedrich Dürrenmatt , Elektra by Sophocles and Mann ist Mann by Bertolt Brecht. In 1985 Nathan the Wise followed in Darmstadt . Between 1994 and 1999, Solter regularly staged at the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen . Solter also took on guest productions at the Stadttheater Ingolstadt . There he directed Brecht's The Good Man of Sezuan in 1995 and Shakespeare's King Lear in the 2000/2001 season .

From 2001 Solter continued to work as a sought-after guest director at various theaters. At the City Theater Ulm , he directed the 2001 Hamlet by William Shakespeare, 2002 The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Kraus . In 2006 Solter brought out the drama Wassa Schelesnowa by Maxim Gorki at the Schwerin State Theater . In Meiningen he took over in the 2006/2007 season, the directed Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov , in the 2007/2008 season at Shakespeare's Othello .

The focus of Solter's artistic activity was clearly on the theater. From the 1960s onwards, Solter also played in some feature films and television films, mostly in period films. In 1970 he played Inspector Varney in the two-part crime thriller The Murderer Sitting in Wembley Stadium . His interpretation of the title role in the TV production of Danton's death in 1977 for GDR television is considered to be outstanding . In 1978 he played Napoléon Bonaparte in the GDR television series Scharnhorst . In 1983, in the GDR feature film Martin Luther , he took on the role of Martin Luther's teacher Karlstadt . In 1990 he played in one of the last television productions in the GDR, in Marie Grubbe based on the story by Jens Peter Jacobsen .

Solter was an acting teacher and lecturer at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin . He is one of the founders of the Institute for Drama Directing at this university. As an award for his artistic work, he was awarded the title of Professor by the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts .
