Frank Vogel (director)
Frank Vogel (born December 30, 1929 in Limbach , † January 16, 1999 in Berlin ) was a German film director and screenwriter .
Live and act
From 1949 to 1951 Frank Vogel studied German , journalism and history with Ernst Bloch and Hans Mayer, among others . In 1952 he went to Moscow for four years to study at the film school. During his studies he began to work as an assistant for the director Konrad Wolf and was involved in the film Recovery (1956), among other things . He made his debut as a film director in 1958 with the film Klotz am Bein , a DEFA production.
In the DEFA feature film The Seventh Year , the director also processed personal experiences. The film tells the story of a marital crisis in which a heart surgeon and an actor are trying to reconcile work and family.
"Many critics consider the film to be the director's best work: it congeals into a conflict-laden psychogram of people whose desire is to realize themselves in society, but who often come up against their own or social limits."
His feature film Just don't think, I'm crying was banned in the former GDR in 1965 and was only shown from 1990. The film is one of the so-called " basement films " or "prohibition films", which were introduced in the course of the XI. Plenary sessions of the Central Committee of the SED were banned in 1965.
Frank Vogel married Ilse Schönholz in 1952; In 1959 their son Jan was born. Like her husband, Ilse Vogel studied in Moscow from 1952. She later worked as a cardiac surgeon at the Charité . Vogel was married to the actress Iris Bohnau in his second marriage until his death . The marriage produced a daughter.
