action

The Berlin worker Kurt Hartung fought on the Eastern Front as a private in the German Wehrmacht in 1943 . Hartung is not very respected by his superiors because he is critical of the war of aggression. Not only does he have to survive Soviet bombing, but he also has to take on dangerous missions, such as defusing duds. When he was taken prisoner by the Soviets as a scout, he met the Soviet first lieutenant Netrebin. He took his time and made it clear to Hartung that the German war of aggression was reprehensible. Hartung lets himself be persuaded to kidnap a German officer with two Soviet soldiers. The company becomes a game with fire that is successfully completed in the end. Not only is the job carried out, but the three different soldiers become friends in the course of the job.

Remarks

The film premiered on April 28, 1970 in Berlin. It was shown in GDR cinemas on May 1st. Despite relatively negative reviews, the film was a hit with the public, with over 500,000 visitors in the first eight weeks, and it cemented Manfred Krug's status as an outstanding star in the GDR.

The casual actor and director Kurt Jung-Alsen plays his only major role in the movie. The shooting team was supported by a Soviet unit stationed in Potsdam , which provided the shooting team with their practice area. The film is the first treatment of the war material with cheerful means at DEFA .

In 2001 the film was released on VHS video in Germany and on DVD in January 2007 .

Reviews

  • The present film reveals the uncertainties with which the filmmakers had to grapple; At the same time, however, he also confirms that the path taken is feasible. Basically it is probably about the problem of whether historical reality is preserved, at the same time probably also about whether the film takes into account the feelings of the millions of citizens of our republic, who associate the war with the most diverse, but ultimately shocking experiences and memories ( Friedrich Salow in Filmspiegel 11/1970)
  • Nothing against humor and certainly nothing against deheorization, but here you seem to fall from one extreme to the other again. The much-touted “artistic mastery” is part and parcel of the use of such stylistic devices. However, this is lacking in the most recent productions. ( Heinz Kersten , 1970, based on So many dreams , Berlin 1996)
