Der Engel im Visier is a television film produced by DEFA on behalf of the DFF by Lothar Bellag in 1969, based on the book by Günter Herlt .

action

The action takes place in a conference room in which a commission of American intellectuals sits, who represent the most important scientific disciplines in order to analyze thoroughly whether a continuously existing peace is possible and desirable for the USA and how the state reacts to such a situation had to prepare. The debate is interrupted several times. The actors turn their backs on their roles at the experts 'table for a few minutes and hold a dialogue with selected representatives of American society in order to confront the strategists' considerations with the thoughts and feelings of those directly and indirectly affected. And finally, commercials are interspersed here and there, but they point to the usual advertising texts, documentary recordings from war zones and anti-war demonstrations.

production

Investigations conducted in the USA for over two and a half years - condensed in time lapse - were the inspiration for this work. A commission of exclusive scientists was to examine in 1962 on behalf of the US government (under the then President John F. Kennedy) whether a lasting peace for the US was possible and desirable and what precautions should be taken in this case. Some of the macabre results of this "Peace Commission" have been made public. The television film is based on this. The first broadcast took place on March 25, 1969 in the 1st program of the DFF and the repetition ran on March 16, 1971 in the 2nd program of the DFF .

criticism

The lexicon of international film described the film as a formally ambitious television film. Das Neues Deutschland wrote on March 25, 1969 that the piece was a mixture of scenic documentation. Interview and commentary that demands the viewer to the full.
