National Feature Film Festival of the GDR
The GDR National Feature Film Festival was a film festival established in 1980 in the GDR for exclusively national feature film productions. It was held for the first time from April 24th to 27th in Karl-Marx-Stadt . The GDR National Feature Film Festival was probably the most important film event in the GDR alongside the Gera National Festival “Goldener Spatz” for GDR children's films in cinema and television and the Documentary Film Festival in Neubrandenburg . The event was organized by the Ministry of Culture of the GDR, the Association of Film and TV Makers of the GDR in cooperation with the Council of the District of Karl-Marx-Stadt .
Kurt Maetzig , President of the Festival Committee, opened the event under the motto “Good films, no disposable goods” with the DEFA strip All my girls by director Iris Gusner . The venue, Karl-Marx-Stadt, with the cultural complex opened in 1974, consisting of the town hall and the affiliated Interhotel “Congress”, presented ideal conditions for “the filmmakers to be accountable to the working people of the Karl-Marx-Stadt working-class district”.
The film festival took place every two years in mid-May and presented productions from this period. Each competition entry was awarded a diploma and the corresponding prize, the "Steiger". A total of ten films were included in the competition.
In 1990 the festival was held for the first and last time in the Berlin Kino International .

Trivia
As part of the 2nd National Feature Film Festival of the GDR, the Clubkino Capitol was opened on April 20, 1982 in the Siegmar district of Karl Marx . In the previous months, the ailing movie theater had been redesigned into a club cinema with swivel armchairs at tables, a terraced slope, catering in the hall and a built-in stage. The new Clubkino Capitol was the third of its kind in what was then the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. Today it is the only art house cinema in the city of Chemnitz.
