Erwin Stranka

Erwin Stranka (born January 3, 1935 in Kaaden , Czechoslovakia , † April 14, 2014 in Potsdam ) was a German film director and screenwriter . He also wrote the script for almost all of his films.

Life

Stranka was born the son of a miner and glove maker. After the end of the Second World War , the family was moved to Halle . Stranka worked as an extra at the Theater of Peace and began studying as a teacher. Later, however, he went to the theater school in Leipzig and finally studied directing at the film faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague from 1953 to 1959 .

The film Der General was made in 1959 as the graduation film of his studies. Stranka began his film career as an assistant, in 1962 he directed his first own film, Josef and his brothers , which is also his first and only television production. His first feature film followed a year later. Was in love with a criminal record after he was initially approved, after ideological objections and the like. a. Heavily shortened by Hans Rodenberg , then Deputy Minister of Culture. After his follow-up projects were not approved either, Stranka resigned from DEFA and worked as a lathe operator in the Karl Marx Potsdam-Babelsberg locomotive construction department . It was not until 1971 that he followed the call to return to DEFA. From 1974 he directed children’s and fairy tale films, and instead of dealing with history as before, he was now concerned with the present.

In 1974 Stranka was awarded the Heinrich Greif Second Class Prize for the film Susanne and the Magic Ring . He also received the FDGB Art Prize for For example Josef . In 1980 he received the audience award "Großer Steiger" at the National Feature Film Festival in Karl-Marx-Stadt for his film Sabine Wulff .

After a stroke in 1990, Stranka retired from the film business. He was married and had two children. His brother Walter Stranka was a poet and writer. The film The Hour of the Daughters is based on a book by his brother.
