action

The Chilean Rogelio had to leave his home after the coup in Chile in 1973 . He found asylum in the GDR and works as a lighting technician for a small theater. He suffers from social isolation. In order to please his relatives who remained in Chile , he invents a bride and finally even a child together and sends photos of strange children home. From his mother's letters, he learns that all relatives are happy about his well-being and the addition to the family. But over time it becomes more and more difficult to maintain the structure of lies. In the end, Rogelio learns that his mother died years ago and that the letters were written under her name by relatives who did not want to burden him with this terrible fact.

criticism

“Despite maintaining the difficult narrative structure - several time levels, flashbacks and dream sequences - [the director] succeeded in creating a wonderfully simple, deeply moving and exciting film that not only breaks through the limitations of our everyday life, but also allows the line between tragedy and comedy to become fluid . Laughing and crying, one learns above all to understand that solidarity is not limited to verbal understanding and material help. "

“Lothar Warneke's special strength, all his sensitivity and his unbroken morality are revealed in the lovingly recorded, carefully and precisely worked detail. This is also where the great beauties and deep truths of this film, which is initially reluctant to open its doors, are most evident. "
