Gerhard Meyer (director)
Gerhard Meyer (born December 29, 1915 in Chemnitz ; † June 21, 2002 there ) was a German actor , director and general manager .
Life
Meyer began his theater career in the early 1950s at the Deutsches Theater Berlin as assistant to Wolfgang Langhoff and Wolfgang Heinz and later as an employee of Heinz at the Neue Scala in Vienna .
From 1957 to 1966 Meyer was artistic director in Potsdam and then took over the artistic director of the Chemnitz city theater until 1990 . During his time in Chemnitz, Meyer discovered and encouraged young directors and actors. So he brought the directors Siegfried Höchst and, in 1986, Frank Castorf to his house and also worked with Jutta Wachowiak , Michael Gwisdek , Jörg Gudzuhn , Peter Sodann , Cornelia Schmaus , Ulrich Mühe and Corinna Harfouch .
Meyer was an honorary member of the Chemnitz Municipal Theater. In 1980 he received the National Prize of the GDR III. Class. In 1985 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.
