occupation

Ete and Ali is a German DEFA film directed by Peter Kahane from 1985.

action

Ete and Ali have just finished their military service and both have little desire to go home: A village where there's never going on awaits the researchy but good-natured Ali, and the shy 22-year-old Ete his wife Marita, who during his time with the army has started a relationship with the wealthy Manni. Ete and Ali plan to travel to Prague just like that, but end up in Ete's apartment due to missing passports. Ali initially disgusts Manni there before he and Ete are kicked out by Marita. Since Manni is hanging on Marita like a burr for the next few days, Ete and Ali kidnap Marita in a truck after work. After a brief, successful escape from Manni through Pasewalk, the first discussion between Ete and Marita takes place. The result is that she moves out of the shared apartment and finds shelter with her father. He, in turn, would prefer to see his daughter at Etes' side and is delighted when he and Ali start again at his transport company, as Ete had done before he joined the army.

Although Ete and Ali hope to gain Marita's respect through the exemplary work done by Marita's father, they succumb to Manni's prosperity time and again. He moves into a two-room apartment in a trendy new district, drives a Lada and owns records that Ete can only dream of. Only Ali's carefree, self-confident manner gives him courage. It is also Ali who persuades Ete to buy an old house. Marita's father, in turn, offers Ete the takeover of the company, which he can no longer manage due to rheumatism . While Ali is enthusiastic, Ete feels too committed from a young age. The marriage with Marita - she moved out of the two-room apartment of the over-horny Manni and moved into Etes' newly bought house - is in ruins because both are too different. Ali believes that having a child is the ideal way to keep the marriage going. Shortly before the inauguration ceremony, however, he ends up drunk in bed with Marita and Ete packs his things. He thinks Ali and Marita would be a better couple.

Ete is later seen driving a truck. He has been divorced from Marita for three months and runs into Ali again by chance in a communal shower. A little later they are on a truck tour together and Ali already has new plans to improve Ete's life.

production

Ete und Ali was created in 1984 in Pasewalk and Ueckermünde, among other places, and had its premiere on May 31, 1985 in the Panorama-Palast-Theater in Erfurt . Both main actors were still in training at the time of shooting: Jörg Schüttauf studied acting, while Thomas Putensen was a music student.

criticism

In 1985 Renate Holland-Moritz praised the "wonderfully pointed dialogues ... the amount of which does not seem chatty but is downright addicting."

The Lexicon of International Films found that “the attempt to strike a balance between humor and serious background… was not entirely convincing. Due to the psychologically precise observation of the people, the film gains credibility and stimulates [...] thought, not least about the metaphorical treatment of the subject of being locked in the 'universe' of the GDR. "

Cinema described the film as a “brisk and moderately critical GDR social comedy” and a “fun ringelpiez from DEFA studios”.

Award

At the Max Ophüls Festival , the film received the Interfilm Jury Prize.

Jörg Schüttauf was honored as the best young actor at the National Feature Film Festival of the GDR in 1986.
