Helmut Dziuba
Helmut Dziuba (born February 2, 1933 in Dresden ; † April 19, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German director and author .
Life
After graduating from school, he learned the profession of heavy current fitter. Dziuba, who had worked as an editor and cabaret artist for the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk in Dresden since his youth , made up his Abitur and studied directing at the WGIK film school in Moscow from 1953 .
During his studies, he worked for the Moscow Radio as a journalist and director of radio plays . He also made his first film in 1958. Dziuba filmed Erich Maria Remarque's play The Last Station for Soviet state television under the title Из пепла (Iz pepla; German title: From the Ashes).
After completing his studies in 1962, Dziuba returned to the GDR and began working as an assistant director at DEFA . Among other things, he assisted Frank Beyer in filming carbide and sorrel . From 1968 he worked as a director on various projects of his own. He made a name for himself above all as a director of children's and youth films, in particular as a filmmaker of classics of GDR children's literature. Some of the films are dedicated to German history in the first half of the 20th century, others also dealt critically with the state of the GDR. His film Verbotene Liebe was one of a series of films that were made towards the end of the GDR and clearly stated the reasons for the country's problems. Even his 1984 film Appearance Duty was critical.
In the GDR Dziuba was highly decorated, some with the Heinrich Greif Prize in 1982 and the Art Prize of the GDR in 1986. For his first post-reunification film Jana and Jan he received the 1992 Bavarian Film Prize . The German Film Award followed in 2004 .
Dziuba lived with his wife in Berlin-Friedrichshagen .
