One carries the other's burden ... is a feature film by Lothar Warneke based on a scenario by Wolfgang Held , which was produced by DEFA and premiered in 1988. The film received the rating "Particularly valuable" and became a hit with the public in the GDR. In 1995 Wolfgang Held published a book with the same title.

action

The plot of the film takes place in a private lung sanatorium at Hohenfels Castle in the early 1950s . The protagonists - Josef Heiliger, a young inspector of the People's Police and a staunch Marxist , as well as Hubertus Koschenz, an evangelical vicar - involuntarily share a sick room because both are suffering from tuberculosis . Both initially demonstrate their controversial worldviews. In the course of time, however, the discussions that inevitably arise reveal a lot of common humanistic ideas. Josef's illness takes a threatening course, while Hubertus' condition slowly improves. Hubertus can obtain novel, highly effective medication from the West through church channels , but then has these - initially without his knowledge - given to the more seriously ill Josef. A secondary line of the plot describes the love that develops between Josef Heiliger and Sonja Kubanek, who is also seriously ill with tuberculosis and who dies on New Year's Eve 1951. At the end, Saint and Koschenz meet at Sonja's grave.

criticism

"A somewhat stenciled, nevertheless sympathetic film, whose plea for the dialogue between Christians and Marxists is supported by wit and good actors."

backgrounds

“Bear the burden of one another” is a quote from Galatians (Galatians 6: 2). A first scenario by Wolfgang Held for the film under the title “… and everyone carries the other's burden” is autobiographical and originated as early as 1973, but it was not until 1986 that DEFA began working on the material in cooperation with the State Secretariat for Church Affairs . At the premiere of the film, Alt Bishop Albrecht Schönherr sat next to Kurt Hager . The film was seen by over 1.2 million viewers and was seen as a sign of the beginning of a dialogue. In the film, a communist and a Christian meet on an equal footing - a novelty in GDR film history. The figure of the Christian reflects the ideas of Emil Fuchs , a theological teacher of Lothar Warneke, who dedicates the film to Emil Fuchs in the credits. The very fact that the film was actually produced was something special - so it is said in a documented audience opinion. The reception of the film was the subject of an investigation by the Central Institute for Youth Research .

In his book “Last und liebes Kummerfeld”, Wolfgang Held goes into a retrospective of the history of its origins from his point of view and presents his thoughts on a possible continuation of the story.

The location for the Hohenfels sanatorium was the Müggenburg moated castle .

Others

The film marked the beginning of a series of films by the Prenzlauer Berg Ecumenical Working Group on the subject of "Faith and Church in GDR Films". At the performance on January 23, 2013 in the UCI “Colosseum” cinema in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg , there was such a rush that, despite the additional performance, there was no room for many interested parties.
