Johanna Clas

Johanna Clas (born September 29, 1931 in Erfurt ; † October 21, 2009 in Berlin ) was a German actress and director .

Life

Clas received private acting lessons from Konrad Gericke and Martin Flörchinger in the early 1950s . She made her debut in the early 1950s at the Theater der Junge Welt in Leipzig . She had another engagement in Leipzig at the Städtische Bühnen Leipzig. In 1954 she appeared as a scandal journalist in the first program of the Leipzig cabaret Die Pfeffermühle in the White Hall of the Leipzig Congress Hall . Since 1954 she has been engaged at the Theater der Freunds in Berlin .

She appeared there in the fairy tale play The Stolen Princess by Fritz Alexander (November 1954 – January 1956), in the play How the steel was hardened by Miroslav Stehlik based on the novel by Nikolai Alexejewitsch Ostrowski (October 1955 – May 1957), in the children's opera man and woman in vinegar jug of Hertha Greef (May 1956 to June 1957; music by Joachim Dietrich link ), in the fairy tale piece the snow Queen by Yevgeny Lvovich Black (November 1957 to March 1959), in the popular play Švanda the Bagpiper of Strakonice by Josef Kajetán Tyl (September 1956 – April 1957), in the play First Love by André Birabeau (January 1957 – June 1959), in the comedy The Liar by Carlo Goldoni (September 1957 – June 1958), in the play The Faces of Simon Machard by Bertolt Brecht and in the fairy tale The Blue Light by Josef Stauder (November 1958 – April 1959).

Afterwards she was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Deutsches Theater Berlin for many years (until 1991) . There she also worked as a theater director, including the 1985 play Lovers by Brian Friel .

Clas also worked for film and television . Since 1957 she has been a regular member of the actors' ensemble of the German TV radio . Since the early 1960s, she has also appeared in numerous DEFA films. There she usually took on the roles of “strict, bitter women, whose biographical background she outlined in just a few scenes”. She played an important role as Lilo in the contemporary romance film Description of a Summer (1962). In 1962 she played in the film drama Murder Without Atonement , which tells the story of the miscarriage of justice in the case of Josef Jakubowski , and Clas played one of the main roles, the wife of Oberlandjäger Lippert. In 1963, Clas took part in the inauguration of a memorial to Jakubowski with the cast of the film in Palingen , the site of the crime. In the children's film Lütt Matten and the White Shell (1963/1964) she embodied the mother of the young fisherman's son Lütt Matten, directed by Herrmann Zschoche . In the children's and youth film Kaule (1967), a film about a juvenile offender who finds a new way of life in the village, she played the role of Aunt Sophie.

For television, Clas also took on roles in the television adaptation of classic theater plays. She played Countess Olivia in Was ihr wollt (1963) and Sittah in Nathan the Wise (1970). In 1966 she embodied the role of Julica in the television production of the play Der arme Konrad by Friedrich Wolf . In 1978 she was seen in the television production of the play The Rooster Crows by Ivan Bucovcan (1921-1975) in the role of the pharmacist's wife.

Clas also acted in two episodes of the GDR crime series The Public Prosecutor has the floor . In the episode The Public Prosecutor has the floor: On the racetrack (1969) she played Marion Callenberg, the wife of Dr. Callenberg; in the episode the prosecutor has the floor: paternity recognized (1972) she played the doctor Dr. Erdmann.

Her later film roles included Countess Visconti in the feature film Der Geisterseher (1987; based on motifs from the eponymous fragment of the novel by Friedrich Schiller ) and Frau Grottenbast in the post-war film One Carrying Another's Burden… .

Occasionally, Clas also worked as a director for television, for example in 1981 for the GDR television game Bau'n se cheaply, Schinkel . In the 1980s she taught at times as a guest lecturer for drama at the State Drama School in Berlin . The actor Alexander Weichbrodt was one of her students .

In 1975 Clas lent her voice to the Japanese actress Misako Tominaga for the GDR dubbing of the Japanese feature film Die Blinde schwertschwingende Frau (1969) . In 1977, Clas performed the role of "Old Iroquois Woman" in the radio play Die Ballade vom Lederstrumpf , based on motifs from the novel cycle ' Lederstrumpf ' , which was published by the LITERA record label .
