Ottofritz Gaillard

Ottofritz Gaillard (born January 22, 1915 in Weimar ; † May 25, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German director .

Life

Ottofritz Gaillard studied theater studies, German, musicology and art history in Berlin and Rostock from 1934 to 1939. At the same time he had taken acting and directing training. In 1941 he received his doctorate in Rostock ( Hans Rehberg, the poet of the "Prussian dramas" ). During the Second World War he was stationed as a soldier in France, where he could buy books about the theater, which he studied intensively. In 1947, the State University of Music in Weimar, with the approval of SMAD , decided to expand its acting department, founded by Ottofritz Gaillard, Maxim Vallentin and Otto Lang in 1946, into an "Institute for the methodical renewal of German theater", which two years later became the German Theater Institute Weimar Belvedere Palace emerged. After this and the dissolution of the Leipzig drama school, Ottofritz Gaillard became head of the drama department of the newly founded Leipzig Theater Academy . From 1956 he worked as a director at the Staatstheater Dresden , the Maxim-Gorki-Theater Berlin and the Volksbühne Berlin , where he was appointed deputy artistic director from 1967. In 1969 he started teaching at the drama school in Berlin. From 1970 he also worked for television as a director and also as an actor.
