The badge of honor of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship was an award from the Society for German-Soviet Friendship of the same name , which was donated in 1954 in two stages, bronze and silver . They were awarded for services to strengthen friendship between the GDR and the Soviet Union .

The first variant of the badge shows the head portrait of Josef Stalin behind the head of Wilhelm Pieck . The waving flags of the Soviet Union and the GDR can be seen behind the portraits, with the flag of the Soviet Union standing in front of the flag of the GDR . The badge is enclosed by a semicircular wreath of oak leaves , which represents the lower border. The back showed a grant number and a pin or screw to attach it.

In the course of the de-Stalinization in the GDR, the appearance of the badge was radically changed in 1959. It only showed the two waving flags, but now the GDR flag (still without the national coat of arms) in front of the Soviet one. The flags were surrounded by a laurel wreath , which, like the first form, forms the lower border of the badge. In 1960 the GDR national coat of arms was added to the flag of the GDR . The back of the newer versions no longer shows the award number, but a cross-soldered needle with a locking hook. This variant was available both silver-plated and gold-plated.
