Jürgen Schadeberg
Jürgen Schadeberg (born March 18, 1931 in Berlin ; † August 29, 2020 ) was a South African photographer and filmmaker of German origin. He became known for his photos, which show the life of South African blacks in Johannesburg in the 1950s.
Life
From 1946 Schadeberg attended the School for Optics and Photo Technology in Berlin. He then did an internship as a photographer at the German Press Agency in Hamburg.
In 1950 he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, where his mother already lived with his stepfather, a British captain. He became the photographer and photo editor of Drum magazine , which was mainly read by the black majority of the population. His black and white photos portray numerous well-known black South Africans such as the politicians Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu and the musicians Miriam Makeba , Dolly Rathebe and Kippie Moeketsi . In addition, he depicted life in the townships in his photos . One focus of his work was the Johannesburg district of Sophiatown , which was known as the "Paris of Johannesburg" due to its cultural significance and was evacuated from 1955 to 1959. In addition, Schadeberg worked as a mentor to numerous local photographers within the drum editorial team, including Peter Magubane . He worked frequently with the journalist Henry Nxumalo . Schadeberg's stance was in conflict with the prevailing apartheid policy , so that he often came into conflict with the authorities. In 1959 he stopped working for the magazine. He subsequently worked as a freelance photographer. As a photographer, he accompanied the anthropologist Phillip Tobias' research trips to the San .
In 1964, Schadeberg left South Africa because his work had repeatedly been hindered by the country's security authorities. From then on he worked as an editor for the London magazine Creative Camera . From 1969 to 1972 he studied painting in Spain . For the Christian Aid company he took positions in Botswana and Tanzania . In 1973 he traveled to Senegal , Mali , Kenya and Zaire . He then taught as a lecturer at several art schools, including in 1980 at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts .
In 1985 Jürgen Schadeberg returned to Johannesburg. He edited photo books and devoted himself to the production of documentaries , which deal primarily with the life of black people in South Africa. The films include Nelson Mandela and the Rise of the ANC (German for example: "Nelson Mandela and the rise of the ANC") and Have You Seen Drum Recently? (for example, “Have you seen Drum recently?”) dealing with Drum magazine . In 1994 he portrayed Nelson Mandela in his former prison cell on Robben Island .
In 2005 Schadeberg's photo book Voices from the Land was published . It's about farmers and farm workers in South Africa.
When he applied for a South African passport in 2008 , his German passport became invalid. It was returned in 2013 on the initiative of Robert von Lucius , Philipp Rösler and Uschi Eid . Schadeberg lived in Berlin from 2011 and moved to Spain in 2013 .
Jürgen Schadeberg was married to the art historian Claudia Schadeberg.
He died in August 2020 at the age of 89.
