Motivsuche is a DEFA feature film by Dietmar Hochmuth from 1990.
action
Rüdiger Stein is a director from the late thirties and so far has only made documentaries about older, important people. He has lived with his partner Christa for seven years and has two children with her and a beautiful apartment. He is only dissatisfied with the films he has made so far. He finally wants to make a “real” film.
There he met 17-year-old Klaus at the youth welfare office, who lives with his alcoholic father and wants his own apartment. When he tells the editor about his girlfriend of the same age who is expecting a child from him, he sees the material for his film in it. Manuela lives with her mother and doesn't know who her father is, but her mother probably doesn't know either. Everything has been agreed between the parties involved, even the superior Gerd from DEFA has agreed after a long hesitation and the shooting can begin. Only Klaus and Manuela have fallen out in the meantime and therefore the film cannot be shot. So now Rüdiger has to make another film about someone who has long since died, about Philipp Melanchthon .
When Klaus' father suddenly dies, Rüdiger is supposed to become his guardian, as he is not yet eighteen years old. Rüdiger agrees and now has very little time for his family. But he sees the possibility of realizing his film project again. He can also convince Manuela to move in with Klaus. Only with the filming, which he now has to carry out without the approval of his boss, there are always problems, for example with Klaus' bricklaying brigade. In order to film the birth of Manuela's child, one of the most important scenes in his documentary, he breaks into the delivery room with the help of a doctor friend. During the recording, the cameraman falls over because Manuela gets an injection and the filming has to be stopped because the midwife wants to give birth to the baby in peace.
Meanwhile there are also problems between Rüdiger and Christa. When he tells her that he has a sexually transmitted disease, she immediately admits that she has cheated on her. As a result of this debate, she kicks him out, because he has left her alone the whole time. Now he sleeps in the car and then with his grandfather in the old people's home, whose second bed in the room was not occupied at the time. Since he has since resigned from his film company, he conducts a tape interview with his grandpa, which he wants to sell to the radio. But Klaus and Manuela have also split up again because she has a new one. Now Rüdiger can sleep with Klaus. Since he has to earn money, he is hired as a waiter on an excursion boat with the help of Manuela's mother. He only got this post because everyone thought he wanted to do research for his next film this way.
production
The outdoor shots took place primarily in Berlin-Mitte , including around the Gendarmenmarkt , Tucholskystraße, Auguststraße , Saalbau Friedrichshain and on the Wittenberg market square . The TV first broadcast took place on January 26, 1995 in the ORB .
criticism
The lexicon of international films wrote that this is a problem film that tries to ironically grasp the topic of art and truth, but fails because of its lack of dramaturgical density.
