The market square of Lutherstadt Wittenberg is located in the center of Wittenberg's old town.

In the generously dimensioned space there are town houses, the Renaissance town hall , the monuments of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon and the market fountain .

Luther monument

In 1805 the "Fatherland Literary Society of the County of Mansfeld" in Mansfeld initially intended to erect a monument to the reformer Martin Luther. After the Wars of Liberation, King Friedrich Wilhelm III. the installation in Wittenberg . The foundation stone was laid in 1817 and the ceremonial unveiling took place on October 31, 1821. The figure of Luther was designed by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1805. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the base, the canopy goes back to the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV. And was often left out of replicas because the Gothic forms, which are reminiscent of the Middle Ages, were felt to be unsuitable for the reformer.

Monument to Philipp Melanchthon

In 1858, Friedrich Drake was commissioned to erect a monument in honor of Philipp Melanchthon . The foundation stone of the monument was laid in 1860 and the inauguration took place in 1865. Johann Heinrich Strack designed the canopy based on Schinkel's design. Melanchthon stands bareheaded and in a robe like Luther , in his right hand the role of Augsburg's creed. After repairs in 1948 and 1967, both canopies were faithfully restored in 2010–13.
