Market fountain (Lutherstadt Wittenberg)
The market fountain is a listed fountain on the market square of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt . It is considered one of the most important works of mannerism in the city.
The current fountain, built in the Renaissance style , was built in 1617 and replaced a fountain built in 1524. The fountain has a square basin made of sandstone . On the corners there are Tuscan columns with architraves . The essays are richly decorated with cloth hangings, masks and scrollwork cartouches . Repairs were carried out several times, including in 1967.
The well was a deep well . The well has been operated as a tubular water well since 1986 . The New Jungfernröhrwasser union was founded as early as 1559 . The union, initially consisting of 19 members, built a system of pipes from pierced tree trunks, which led over 2.7 kilometers of spring water into the city and distributed it to various houses. A quantity of ten liters of water was dispensed per customer in four minutes. The union still exists today. The market fountain is now operated as a tubular water fountain via the system.
For the anniversary year 2017 the 400 year old fountain was completely renewed.
