The Distance Between You and Me and Her is a German DEFA film directed by Michael Kann from 1988.

action

The journalist Marga is commissioned by her editor-in-chief to interview a rock singer from Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Since she is only supposed to do this as a substitute for a colleague, she wants to deal with the matter completely emotionless. Anne's answers make her curious and when Robert, the singer's former friend, appears in the apartment, she begins to be interested in the subject. Robert got married early, got divorced and couldn't come to an agreement with his director as a dubbing writer. He now works in a second-hand bookshop, where he sells books and writes poetry, which he is not yet satisfied with. Anne, who was once a machining specialist (turning, drilling, milling) before her talent for singing was discovered, who has a pronounced temperament and a lot of tenacious ambition and who also knows moments of self-doubt and who likes to provoke sex as her hobby - what is it all about? All this pulls Marga, single with child, smooth, cool and self-confident and in her job of routine efficiency under the spell. A love triangle develops. Originally Marga just wanted to get some information from Robert about Anne, but she falls in love with him. But time shows that Robert cannot be without Anne and that it is the other way around. For Marga, separating from Robert is the only option.

production

The distance between you and me and her was filmed by the artistic work group “Johannisthal” on ORWO color and had its world premiere on May 27th, 1988 for “Kinosommer 88” in the Kulturhaus on October 7th in Suhl . As early as May 12, 1988, the film saw a preview at the 5th National Feature Film Festival in Karl-Marx-Stadt . The first broadcast on the first program of the GDR television took place on December 7, 1989. The film was shown in West German cinemas on April 5, 1990.

criticism

In the Berliner Zeitung , Detlef Friedrich said: “A specific attitude towards life was attempted, and as far as I can judge it was met. That of talented, intelligent, experienced, vulnerable contemporaries who are still on the road at 30. From city dwellers who feel more within themselves than they have managed. Those who doubt themselves, work on themselves. Others also criticize. "

Horst Knietzsch wrote in Neues Deutschland : “The film tells a pointed, brisk story (scenario: Stefan Kolditz) about people who want to go in the right direction, but are basically late developers. Since they usually lack orientation, they run in zigzags or in circles, sometimes living and acting like an imitation of the type that the French director Godard once characterized as the children of 'Marx and Coca Cola'. "

The lexicon of international films called the film a commercially oriented DEFA comedy that strives for lightness and the portrayal of the lifestyle of young Berlin intellectuals. Double-bottomed and largely attractive.
