In 1985 he finally founded Element of Crime in Berlin , where he sings, plays guitar and trumpet; Since then he has also written almost all of the lyrics for this band.

The book reached a circulation of over a million copies. Regener also wrote the screenplay for Leander Haußmann 's film adaptation of the same name with Christian Ulmen in the title role , for which he was awarded the German Film Prize in Gold and the German Screenplay Prize.
