Magical Mystery or: The Return of Karl Schmidt is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sven Regener . The 2017 comedy film deals with the techno boom in the early 1990s, shortly after reunification . Directed by Arne Feldhusen .

action

Karl Schmidt, pioneer of electronic music , is getting on in years. After several psychotic and depressive episodes , he now lives in Hamburg-Altona in a drug shared apartment. His old friend Raimund Schulte meets him during a visit to the ice cream parlor. Things are going well for him at the moment. His techno label Bumm Bumm Records, which he built up with his partner Ferdi, makes a lot of money. A short time later, Karl is about to take his annual vacation, Raimund contacts him again and invites him to Berlin. Against the express request of his supervisor Werner, Karl went to Berlin instead of taking his cure.

Ferdi makes him an offer in Berlin. Based on the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour, the label's artists are to tour Germany in a bus. Karl should act as a driver and watchdog, make sure that you always arrive on time and watch out that nothing gets out of hand. Ten people in a nine-man bus set off on the bizarre journey. The entire team, with the exception of Karl, is more or less on drugs for the entire trip, and so bizarre experiences line up. Karl takes care of the mix of old and new friends, feeds the guinea pigs who have traveled with him and falls in love with pink. In between he experiences psychotic attacks again and again, but manages to safely escort the artists from Bremen via Cologne to Munich. In Munich he has to “hang up” himself because Basti from HostiBrosti drank a little too much. He dances around wildly and entertains the audience. During the subsequent day-off, Rosa and Karl get even closer.

Then there are two shows in Hamburg where Karl is also confronted with his old life. He now decides to move to Berlin with Rosa. But first of all, the biggest gig of the tour is coming up: a performance at Springtime in Dortmund (based on Mayday ). Werner confronts his protégé there, but Karl can defend himself and tells Werner about his plan to move to Berlin. On the same night he also tells Rosa about it, who encourages him to go through with it and can imagine a life with him. After spending a night together, Karl collects the artists and brings them back to Berlin.

background

Magical Mystery or: The Return of Karl Schmidt is based on the novel of the same name by Sven Regener, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The book and film are a kind of continuation by Mr. Lehmann . In both films, the character Karl Schmidt appears, Mr. Lehmann's best friend. While he was played by Detlev Buck at Herr Lehmann 's, Charly Hübner now took over the leading role. However, Buck can still be seen in the film: as the aging techno star Ferdi.

The film premiered at the Munich Film Festival . Annika Meier won the award for best young actress there. It started in German cinemas on August 31, 2017.

Reviews

The press evaluation of the film was very different, with main actor Charly Hübner generally being viewed positively.

David Steinitz in the Süddeutsche Zeitung is quite impressed by the survival artists from the German 1990s in their simple portrayal and Horst Peter Kroll from the film service also finds the techno road movie a worth seeing, human look at this epoch.

Sonja Hartl described the film on Kino-zeit.de as “an entertaining film for long stretches, which unfortunately occasionally gets too drifting in the performances and the music.” She praises Sven Regener's milieu-shaped language, which is well suited for the film would.

Oliver Armknecht discussed the film favorably on Film-Rezensions.de:

“And for that reason alone, the film is extremely likeable. It's a relief how easily everyone just does their thing without worrying about whether anyone is watching. Magical Mystery, which premieres at the Munich Film Festival and will be regularly released in cinemas at the end of August, looks like a foreign body in today's comedy landscape. Fallen out of time. That is certainly also due to the setting: Charts on printed paper? German techno music? Here everyone can feel transported back in time twenty years, whether they want to or not. Go on a journey that is somehow completely pointless, but still makes you happy and yet also sad. Or to put it in Karl's words: It's all kind of great. But also great stupid. "

- Oliver Armknecht : Film-Rezensions.de

Pop critic Jens Balzer von der Zeit also admires the acting performance, misses the plot a bit, but likes the relaxed atmosphere that the film exudes, while Gerrit Bartels from the Berliner Tagesspiegel attests to the film at least a positive development in humor.

Peter Luley is rather critical of Spiegel Magical Mystery because, in his opinion, he has not found the right tone between melancholy, tragic comedy and slapstick. Martin Schwickert from epd Film finds the film lengthy and Tobias Sedlmaier from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung cannot find much positive in the humor of the novel adaptation, which is described as stupid comedy.

music

In addition to techno, pieces from completely different genres are also used.

Audience response

The film started on August 31, 2017 in 110 German cinemas and was seen by 36,157 viewers in the first week, which meant 14th place in the German cinema charts. The film reached number 1 in the German art house charts .
