New Vahr South

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neue Vahr Süd is a novel by Sven Regener , published in 2004. The title refers to the new development area Neue Vahr Süd in the east of Bremen .

The book takes place from June 30, 1980 to mid-November of the same year and tells the story of Frank Lehmann , the main character in Regener's novel Herr Lehmann .

content

Frank Lehmann, who at that time no one called Mr. Lehmann , had to do his basic military service in the Bundeswehr in the Lower Saxony barracks Dörverden . For reasons largely incomprehensible to himself, he overslept to refuse military service . His parents used his first week in the barracks to clean up Frank's room for his father's hobby. Then Frank moves into a shared apartment with students, " organized " or ex-organized people and punks in the Ostertorviertel in Bremen.

Sequels

The story is continued in the novel The Little Brother (published in 2008), which describes the protagonist's experiences immediately after his arrival in Berlin in November 1980. Both volumes together form the prelude to Regener's novel Herr Lehmann , which is set in 1989 and first appeared in 2001 (namely in 2001).

Note on content and textuality

The riots at the public vow in the Weser Stadium described in the book actually took place, but not on November 5th, but on May 6th, 1980 (see vow ceremony in Bremen 1980 ). At that time there were around 260 injuries and property damage of around one million Deutschmarks. The day was marked by the slogan “The sixth of May will not pass!”, Which Bremer Autonome maintained for more than ten years and often sprayed it on walls.

The novel Neue Vahr Süd is written according to the old spelling rules , since Sven Regener is of the opinion that what happened in 1980 should also be expressed in the spelling customary at the time .

A striking stylistic device is the inner monologue : Regener uses the expression “he thought” a total of 890 times on the 616 pages of the book.

filming

Hermine Huntgeburth filmed Neue Vahr Süd based on a script by Christian Zübert for ARD. Frederick Lau took on the role of Frank Lehmann. The film was shot in Cologne, Mechernich and Bremen. The premiere took place on October 1st, 2010 at the Hamburg Film Festival . On December 1, 2010, the television premiere was in the main evening program of the first .
