action

The single Sibylle Seewald runs a company canteen and is rather unpopular with her colleagues because of her severity. She has a relationship with the married Hartloff. Harald Reich, on the other hand, is a widower and father of two sons - the older one is doing his military service, while the younger son Karsten has just started school. The mother died of cancer. At a company party at which Sibylle is once again recognized as an activist and separates from Hartloff, she is approached by Harald. Both end up drunk in Sibylle's apartment and spend the night together. The next morning Harald disappeared and only left a letter with his telephone number. A little later the two meet by chance and Sibylle realizes disappointed that Harald is looking for a future wife via a personal ad. She now wants to change her entire life.

Sibylle quits her job in the large canteen. Although she initially quarrels with Harald, the two soon reconcile and decide to try it out on a common sense and not out of love. Sibylle moves into Harald's house, becomes friends with Karsten and after a short time begins to redesign the radio amateur's home . Sibylle blossoms at first and Harald lets her go around the house, but with time withdraws more and more. When Sibylle wants to draw a conclusion about the coexistence after a while, a dispute arises between the two partners in which they accuse each other of a lack of respect for the other's peculiarities. Sibylle feels that Harald is stuffy, while Harald has no desire to let Sibylle order him around. In the end, Harald travels head over heels alone on a vacation whose duration and location only he knows.

Sibylle turns her life upside down again. She takes care of Karsten, who is soon taken in by her mother. Sibylle, on the other hand, starts working again in the company canteen - now as a simple cook. During this time she realizes that she is missing Harald. One day when the phone in Harald's house is busy, she rushes home from work. Harald has come back and they both embrace.

criticism

Film critic Günter Agde stated on the occasion of the premiere in 1984:

“The film is undecided in the genre. The great comedy, which he offers to a large extent in the approach and in the play of the main actors, apparently still fails in view of the societal explosiveness of the problem. The story lacks breadth and depth for the psychological drama of existential proportions […]! The genre indecision, which I can explain but not approve of, must also be blamed on the middle that film has to occupy between art and pamphlet, between journalism and aesthetics. So he is welcome to us as a good, compelling and honest contribution to the discussion. "

- Günter Agde 1984

In spite of critical comments, a strange love for him as a whole was "after a noticeable break again a DEFA film in our cinemas, which is worth watching." Renate Holland-Moritz wrote that "the efforts of director Lothar Warneke, reality on the heels as documentary as possible to be [...] for lack of artistic condensation [brings] hardly any profit ”. The viewer tends to be left bored.

For the lexicon of international films , Eine strange Liebe was a “sensitive portrait that illuminates working life and personal happiness in the GDR. Played intensely and unobtrusively staged, the film reflects everyday life in the GDR and points to similarities in the two German states. " Cinema said:" The play is played quite well, but overall a bit inconspicuous. Conclusion: unobtrusive, small film ”.

Awards

A strange love won several awards at the National Feature Film Festival of the GDR in 1986 : Wolfram Witt received the National Film Award for the best screenplay, Christiane Dorst was honored for the best costume and Christine Schorn received the National Film Award for the best leading actress.

As early as 1985, Jörg Gudzuhn was awarded the GDR Film Critics' Prize, the "Big Flap", for best actor.
