Ernst Cantzler (born May 27, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German screenwriter and director .
Life
Ernst Cantzler was born in Berlin as the son of a civil servant and a kindergarten teacher. He attended a primary school in Berlin with his six siblings and learned to be a welder . But his passion was acting, so that, in addition to his job, he appeared as a supporting actor in DEFA feature films. In 1962 he successfully applied as a theater actor at the Salzlandtheater in Staßfurt .
After three years of military service in the National People's Army , he began working as an assistant director in a film studio of the People's Army in 1968. At that time he was already planning to study directing to become a theater director - but he gave up this dream in favor of a civil servant career. In the years that followed, Cantzler did his A-levels and got a position as assistant director in the DEFA studio for documentary films. From 1971 to 1977 he also studied directing at the University of Film and Television Potsdam .
After completing his studies in 1977 he was employed as a full-time director in the DEFA studio for documentary films, where he also worked until the reunification in 1991, before ending his career as a film director. Up until the mid-1980s, he and a handful of colleagues directed around 150 children's films, as well as elaborate television productions for German television , such as: … vom Flug ein Film (1975).
Between 1982 and 1988 he worked as a board member of the Association of Film and Television Workers in the GDR.
Ernst Cantzler lives with his wife and their son near Berlin.
