Sibylle Schönemann

Sibylle Schönemann (born October 5, 1953 in Berlin ) is a German director.

Life

Sibylle Schönemann was born under the name Sibylle Stürzenberger as the daughter of a couple of doctors. After graduating from high school, in 1972 she started working as an assistant director in the DEFA studio for feature films. In 1974 she began studying directing at the Film and Television Academy. Several films were made during her studies. After completing her studies, Sibylle Schönemann worked as an assistant director and dramaturge in the DEFA studio for feature films. From 1980 to 1984 she was a member of the “Berlin” group. She worked as an assistant director on the film Island of the Swans . In 1984 she applied to leave the country. As a result, in November 1984, she was arrested by the Ministry of State Security . In February 1985, she was sentenced to 12 months in prison for "interfering with government activities". In July 1985 she was ransomed and moved to the Federal Republic of Germany. She settled in Hamburg.

From 1987 to 1992 she worked as a dramaturge and screenplay editor in the Hamburg film office. After the reunification in the GDR, Sibylle Schönemann attended the congress of the Association of Film and TV Makers in the GDR in 1990. This is where the idea arose of working with DEFA to document their imprisonment. This is how she made her most famous film, Locked Time , in 1990 , which documents evasions, self-justifications and refusal to speak by SED and Stasi perpetrators after the collapse of the GDR dictatorship. She has been working as a freelance writer and director since 1991. After training in body-oriented Gestalt therapy, psychology and the like, she has been working since 2003. a. active as a mediator. Sibylle Schönemann is first married to the filmmaker Hannes Schönemann and has two children. She lives and works in Hamburg.
