action

Ramona is a sensitive woman in her early 30s. She lives in Berlin near the Ostkreuz S-Bahn station . She works in a cosmetics factory, where no one will notice her. She mainly spends her free time looking out the window from her apartment. There is the show of life, because the main protagonists of their observations live in a neighboring apartment and are a constantly arguing married couple with a young daughter. Ramona's life suddenly takes a turn when she unexpectedly kisses a young Polish man at the train station. Andrzej is a cigarette smuggler and can escape the police by kissing him. Ramona falls in love with the likeable man and a tender love story emerges, which seems to have a happy ending when Ramona becomes pregnant and is looking forward to her own child. They would like to give their child significantly different conditions for life than they could observe day after day in the neighboring family. But life has another turn for them. She wants to marry Andrzej and start a family, but she finds out that Andrzej is already married in Poland. A world collapses for Ramona. When her sister Lucie is arrested by the police for theft, Ramona suffers a miscarriage. She just seemed to have freed herself from her isolation and had hope for a happy life, now everyday life seems even more painful than before. She desperately wants to have a little luck in life after all and decides to kidnap a child, which she tries to create an illusion of a happy family.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : A haunting study of loneliness and mental stuntedness, which makes extreme mental states visible and, to a certain extent, understandable through the outstanding leading actress. Although the film occasionally touches on the picturesque, the depiction of human hardship and the attempt to describe little perceived sensitivities of the present are touching.

Awards

In 1997, the film and leading actress Susanne Lothar were nominated for the German Film Prize. The film has also been shown at various international film festivals and has won several awards.
