Friedensfahrer is a documentary film by Rainer Ackermann from the DEFA studio for documentary films about the 36th International Peace Trip in 1983 from 1984 .

action

This color documentary reports on the International Peace Trip 1983 , it consisted of 12 individual stages and led over a total length of 1899 kilometers from Warsaw via Berlin to Prague . The first pictures show the cyclists at the start of the prologue in Warsaw, among them the GDR driver Uwe Raab . With filmic reviews of the 1st peace trip in 1948 with the Czechoslovak driver Jan Veselý and the 1st peace trip stage on GDR soil in 1952, the historical reasons for holding these races are documented in more detail. Winner in Berlin in 1952 was the Austrian Franz German , who inWalter Ulbricht Stadium in Berlin was received with jubilation by visitors, including many members of the party and state leadership.

During the first stage from Warsaw to Olsztyn , the British cyclist Hugh Ashworth is shown for the first time, who is at the end of the field and who arrives at the stadium about 17 minutes after the winner Uwe Raab. This driver will be watched over the entire race alongside the drivers from the GDR. He is fighting for the first time in Eastern Europe and praises the organization and warm camaraderie between all teams. His greatest wish is to arrive in Prague. But the main focus is of course on the drivers of the GDR, who are among the best participants. This includes pictures of the race tracks, stage arrivals, trips in the bus and team meetings. You won nine of the twelve stages alone. Five stages went to Olaf Ludwig , three stages to Uwe Raab and the last arrival in Prague was won by Andreas Petermann , for whom it was the first stage victory after eight participations in the peace run. Overall winner was Falk Boden from the GDR.

production

The title of the opening credits is Friedensfahrer , which was filmed on ORWO color by the artistic working group “kontakt” and was shown in GDR cinemas on January 27, 1984.

criticism

The film by Rainer Ackermann gives the material a broad dimension through its historical-dialectical approach and embeds it in larger contexts. This is the opinion of Margit Voss in the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland .

Klaus-Peter Wolf from the Neue Zeit said that the filmmakers sometimes get beautiful and dramatic images that make the hardship of the sporting fight as clear as the concerns of the peace drive.
