7500 is a thriller by Patrick Vollrath , which celebrated its world premiere on August 9, 2019 at the Locarno Film Festival and was released in German cinemas on December 26, 2019. It is Vollrath's debut feature film. In the film, which takes place exclusively in the cockpit of an Airbus A319 , Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes on the lead role of co-pilot Tobias Ellis, who has to assert himself against an attempt by a group of young men to break into the cockpit.
action
For co-pilot Tobias Ellis it seems to be a completely normal working day. As always, he routinely prepares the aircraft for take-off and safely takes the Airbus A319 into the air together with the older and more experienced German pilot Michael Lutzmann. It should go from Berlin to Paris. Tobias' German-Turkish friend Gökçe, who works as a stewardess for the same company, is also on board.
But then suddenly you hear screaming on board Flight 162. Three Muslim extremists armed with broken glass try to storm the cockpit. When the first terrorist, Kenan, manages to wriggle inside and seriously injure Michael, Tobias, who is injured in the arm, knocks him out and ties him to a seat in the cockpit. Michael dies a little later despite Tobias' resuscitation attempts.
Tobias can see what is happening in front of the door on a black and white monitor. The terrorists murder a passenger and Gökçe in front of the camera. Then Kenan recovers and he can let the 18-year-old terrorist Vedat into the cockpit, who ties Tobias but doesn't kill him. Kenan begins to crash the plane but is then overwhelmed by Vedat, who frees Tobias. Tobias carries out an emergency landing in Hanover with the help of Vedat.
During the evacuation, Vedat takes Tobias hostage. After long discussions and negotiations with the police, Vedat threatens Tobias with a piece of glass in the cockpit window and is shot by the police.

Reviews
Boyd van Hoei of The Hollywood Reporter writes that Patrick Vollrath's decision to keep the Aristotelian units of action, time and space is interesting. In addition to the few passengers who pass the cockpit door in front of the camera, the aircraft's passengers are never seen. However, this fact also confronts the director with the problem of having to fill the 90 minutes, with only limited space for characters or actions in the cockpit. Van Hoei criticizes the credible representation of the terrorists' motivation, who apparently only want to take revenge on the West because the West is killing Muslims. Vollrath may try to comment on the world as a globalized melting pot by giving Tobias a half-Turkish girlfriend and a quarter-Turkish child, but this mostly feels like tokenism , because although the American works with his girlfriend and son in Germany and lives, Tobias made no effort to learn even a little German or Turkish. Even if a certain behavior like the Stockholm Syndrome creeps into the relationship between Vedat and Tobias at the end of the film, this does not have the space it needs to be credibly developed. Van Hoei highlights the work of cameraman Sebastian Thaler and production designer Thorsten Sabel , who would have created a cockpit with relatively rough and economical lighting that looks convincing and at the same time serves as a space for the dramatic fights and difficult decisions that have to be made there.
Patrick Heidmann from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten in his article on the Locarno Film Festival mentions that the first half of 7500 films in particular is “masterful genre cinema”. Vollrath would achieve something remarkable, especially with a view to the limited setting. In addition, one can assume “that a lot can be expected from Vollrath in the coming years”.
Patrick Wellinski from Deutschlandfunk Kultur describes the film as a “precise genre work” that “uses the genre codes very skilfully and also has something claustrophobic in a confined space, just in the cockpit”.
Günter H. Jekubzik from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater remarks that despite all the differences to the usual aircraft hijackings , in which presidents like in Air Force One or Jodie Foster in Flightplan regain control in astonishingly spacious machines, 7500 have one thing in common with them: " It's extremely exciting! ”The key difference, besides concentrating on tight spaces, is the focus on psychology instead of action, whereby Tobias Ellis doesn't fight his opponents so much, but for the survival of everyone, even his opponents, including overcoming them According to Jekubzik, lower feelings of revenge belong, which fuel almost all such films.
