Senad Halilbašić

Senad Halilbašić (born September 18, 1988 in Tuzla , SFR Yugoslavia ) is an Austrian screenwriter, film producer, dramaturge and theater and cultural scientist of Bosnian origin. Together with Patrick Vollrath he wrote the script for the 2019 film 7500 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the leading role.

Life

Halilbašić was born in today's Bosnia and Herzegovina and grew up in Graz, Austria . In 2008 he moved to the federal capital to study theater, film and media studies at the University of Vienna .

Career

Halilbašić's interest in cinematic and dramaturgical concepts goes back to his youth. During his school days he realized film projects and dealt with literary and textual forms, as well as the representation of contemporary history.

In 2008 he received the EXIL Literature Prize for the best prose for his story “Heimat”, in which he dealt with the limits of integration and assimilation and took a differentiated look at this topic by stating: “You have to find the balance between ' How do I get recognized? ' and 'How do I stay myself?'. ”It's not about what you have to do“ to integrate ”, but about the problems that arise when“ you are integrated ”.

Filmmaking

He gained his first experience on film sets at the Graz youth film association LOOM u. a. as camera assistant for the 2006 feature film Jenseits .

As a producer he has been responsible for numerous internationally award-winning short films, including projects for the Vienna Film Academy . For example, he produced the short film Unser Lied by director Catalina Molina , which won the Diagonale Short Film Prize in 2012 and the Austrian Film Prize in 2013, as well as the short film We Fly (2013; director: Ulrike Kofler ), which received a nomination for the First Steps Award.

A project that unites his cultural and cinematic activities was the documentary Korida (2016), for which he wrote the script with director Siniša Vidović . The film accompanies several protagonists of the Bosnian bullfights, a ritual festival that has so far hardly been recorded on film, a ritual festival that brings together the various population groups of the post-war society, which was marked by crisis.

Together with Gerald Igor Hauzenberger , Senad Halilbašić wrote the screenplay for his ORF documentary Hypotopia - The Search for Responsibility (2016), which searches for those responsible for the Hypo Alpe Adria banking scandal and the links between banks, politics and lobbyists Reason goes.

The collaboration with the director Patrick Vollrath has already brought several successes to light. The short film Alles wird gut (2015; Director: Patrick Vollrath), for which Halilbašić was the dramaturgist, received the Austrian Film Prize 2016 and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Short Film in the same year. In 2019 the airplane thriller 7500 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead role, for which Halilbašić and Vollrath wrote the script together, celebrated its acclaimed world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival .

Dramaturgical work

Since 2010 he has been working for the film production and material development company Witcraft Szenario . There he initially worked as the coordinator of the intercultural script development program Diverse Histories , which he has been in charge of as a dramaturge and script consultant with Robert Buchschwenter since 2014 and which he was nominated for the Austrian State Prize for Adult Education in 2010.

The films with dramaturgical accompaniment by Halilbašić include Attack of the Lederhosenzombies (2016; director: Dominik Hartl ) and Die Migrantigen (director: Arman T. Riahi ), which won the audience award at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival in 2017.

Halilbašić has held numerous workshops, conferences, advanced training courses in the areas of scriptwriting, dramaturgy, story development, etc. a. with Robert McKee, Helen Jacey, Guillermo Arriaga, Maren Ade.

Scientific career

Senad Halilbašić studied theater, film and media studies at the University of Vienna. His diploma studies were followed by a position as a university assistant at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies parallel to his doctoral studies.

Between 2011 and 2013 he worked as a freelance cultural scientist on Sarajevo's literature and, together with Ingo Starz, was the editor of the Sarajevo anthology library. Literary survey of a city (Drava 2012), which received the honorary award of the Sarajevo Book Fair 2013. Halilbašić also wrote the radio feature Burning Memory in collaboration with Starz . The Dead Books of Sarajevo (WDR / RBB 2012). In 2015 he was co-organizer of the conference Theater during the Yugoslav Wars , from which an international research network on theater phenomena of that time emerged.

In 2019, Halilbašić received his doctorate with the thesis " Players and spectators as well as a grenade that is far enough away." - Theater in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992 to 1995 with doctoral supervisor Stefan Hulfeld . As part of his dissertation, Halilbašić carried out basic research on the history of theater into the activities of institutional theaters in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995. He examined the activities of theater institutions and the functions of state theater institutions as well as the resulting forms of theater in four Bosnian-Herzegovinian cities a. a. through a one-year research stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. His field research in this area represents the first-time collection and translation of primary material on site (video recordings of performances, line versions, programs, reviews; conversations with contemporary witnesses who work in the theater). In his analysis he made use of interdisciplinary research approaches from theater studies, South Slavonic studies, oral history and Southeast European history. On this basis, he developed a decisive study of the functions of theater during the Bosnian War.

Since 2019 Halilbašić has held a position as a university assistant and postdoc for South Slavic literary and cultural studies at the University of Vienna.

He regularly publishes texts in RAY Filmmagazin and in the Theater der Zeit and is on the board of the interdisciplinary research group Akademie an der Grenz .
