John Gürtler
John Gürtler (* 1981 in London ) is a German saxophonist and film composer . He received the European Film Award in 2019 for his score for the film Systemsprenger .
life and career
John Gürtler grew up in London as the son of Portuguese-German parents. From the age of eleven he received saxophone and piano lessons. In 2001 he moved to Berlin, where he began studying music at the University of the Arts . His teachers were u. a. Jerry Granelli , David Friedman (composition) and Sigi Busch . He then studied film music and sound design at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy .
He is co-founder of the Berlin studio Paradox Paradise. Since 2012 he has been teaching film music and sound in artistic, experimental film as a guest lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy .
Prizes and awards
- 2014: Best song in the film for “What Love Is” from the film Antons Fest by Kolya Reichart
- 2015: German Documentary Award for Music to Gürtler Paradox Paradise for the documentary Above and Below by Nicolas Steiner
- 2016: 1st Composition Prize at the Dok.Fest Munich for the film Space Dogs by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter
- 2019: Best music and sound design at Filmkunst MV 2019 for Systemsprenger by Nora Fingscheidt
- 2019: European film award in the category of best film music for system sprinklers
