Anna supports Alexander in the annual entrance examination for the music high school because she sees a great talent in him. Anna teaches the violin at a music school, her husband is an instrument maker. You have a ten year old son, Jonas. At school Anna stands up for young Alexander, in whom she sees great talent alone. She spends a lot of energy and attention preparing him for the next exam, to prove she was right. Soon Anna devotes more time to him than Jonas and brings the two boys into rivalry. Simultaneously with the breakdown of her marriage, she increasingly withdraws from her own family and begins an affair with her colleague Christian, who encourages her to join a quartet. Because she fails during their joint concert, the pressure increases. On the day of the exam, events take a tragic turn.

The film project received screenplay funding of 25,000 euros from the German Film Funding Agency, 220,000 euros from the Franco-German Funding Commission , the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg funded the film with 300,000 euros, and the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung granted young talent funding of 80,000 euros.
Filming began on October 22, 2018 and ended after 28 days of shooting in Berlin.
The film premiered on September 8, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival . Also in September 2019 it ran at the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián , with Nina Hoss winning the Silver Shell for best actress. It was released in German cinemas on January 23, 2020. At the end of August and beginning of September 2020, it will be presented in the open-air edition of the Festival of German Films .
