Born in Evin is a German-Austrian documentary film by the production company Tondowski Films from 2019 and also the debut film by director Maryam Zaree . It had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 in the section "Perspektive Deutsches Kino" , from which it received the Kompass-Perspektive-Award . A number of other awards followed, including the German Film Prize in 2020 .

action

The actress and director Maryam Zaree searches for her Iranian origins, especially for the background of her own birth in 1983 in the political prison of Evin . After the overthrow of the Persian Shah in 1979, the new leadership under the religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini arrested, tortured and murdered countless political opponents. This also included Maryam Zaree's parents, who, however, survived. The only buried memory she had left was when she broke into a sweat while listening to verses of the Koran that had been played continuously in prison. Maryam Zaree tries to break the silence she has experienced for years about the traumas she has experienced and to ask specific questions. During her four years of research, however, she found it very difficult to get those affected to talk. In particular, she only finds someone of the same age who also lived in Evin as a child and was interviewed in front of the camera.

The film also works with symbols, e.g. B. with pictures in which Maryam Zaree is dragging a parachute behind her, the cords she successfully severed in the end.

criticism

In the Tagesspiegel , Gunda Bartels was impressed by the director's tears, which were not cut out and which made “the trauma of the experience of violence obvious” . At the same time, she considers it “quite possible that 'Born in Evin' will now open up a conversation with their parents for other children” .
