Story and concept

With over 150 feature films, documentaries and short films not yet shown in cinemas and over 300 screenings, the Five Lakes Film Festival (FSFF) has become one of the largest film festivals in southern Germany over the years. It takes place on 14 screens at the locations of the five-lake region southwest of Munich in Starnberg , Seefeld , Herrsching (until 2017), Wörthsee and Weßling . Gauting was also the venue for the first time in 2017 .

The festival was founded in 2007 by festival director Matthias Helwig and took place annually on twelve days in late July / early August until 2017. Since 2015, the festival has opened its main competition, the Five Lakes Film Prize, to films from all over the world. The focus so far has been on the latest feature films and documentaries from the region in Central Europe, especially from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol (DACHS countries). Since 2011, the FSFF has been the film festival with the most Swiss films outside of Switzerland with over 20 productions from Switzerland.

The FSFF offers a competition for the best feature film, the best screenplay, the best newcomer film, the best documentary, the best medium-length film, the best short film and important acting. In total, prizes and prize money worth approx. 20,000 euros will be awarded. The film award “Perspektive junges Kino” has existed since 2015 - here the best first or second films by directors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are awarded. The "Horizonte" film prize is awarded to the film that deals most with the dignified coexistence of society. In memory of the actress Hannelore Elsner , who died in April 2019, the Hannelore Elsner Prize for important acting was launched in June 2019. Top-class juries select the respective winner.

The program of the International Film Festival focuses on Central European film and is rounded off by new German and international productions, the invitation of a guest country and a retrospective, which is dedicated every year to an important film personality. In addition, the FSFF will present films from festivals around the world in an audience award competition, the winners of which will be awarded funding for a film copy. Open-air performances right on the banks of two lakes and a retrospective introduce the festival.

According to the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, the nightly trip on the largest excursion boat on Lake Starnberg, MS Starnberg, is “one of the most beautiful film parties in the world”.

In 2019 the Five Lakes Film Festival counted around 21,000 visitors (in comparison: 19,000 visitors (2015), 17,000 visitors (2014), 14,000 visitors (2013), 13,000 visitors (2012), 12,000 visitors (2011), 10,000 visitors (2010), 8,000 visitors (2009), 6,500 visitors (2008)).

The founder and current festival director is Matthias Helwig, owner of the Breitwand- Kino in Starnberg , Seefeld , Gauting and until 2018 in Herrsching . Since 1986, Helwig has received more than 100 awards for outstanding children's, documentary and annual film programs. In 1997 and 2013, his wide-screen cinema was named the best cinema in Germany and in 1998 the best cinema in Bavaria.
