The room in the mirror is a German film by the director Rudi Gaul . The 2007 film by Schattengewächs Filmproduktion GmbH has been distributed by MFA + Filmdistribution eK since 2009

Plot, set, atmosphere

The drama tells the story of a Jewish doctor Luisa, who was hidden by her husband Karl in a room on the top floor during the National Socialist era . The film, which was shot in a demolition house, takes place in a single room, while the outside world is only accessible through words and noises, such as the conversations of the Nazi couple Niedermeyer in the neighboring apartment, or a shooting scene in front of the window as well as the reports of the few visitors and through dialogues can be experienced in front of the door. Later, the resistance fighter and friend of the husband Judith found shelter in the room. Through the erotic tension between the women in the situation of isolation, persecution and danger, the film experiences an additional dimension as well as through fantasies and fantastic elements in which the leading actress loses herself.

It is remarkable how carefully the director shows the attempts of the main character to maintain beauty, style and civilization in the isolated and shabby attic, be it through clothing, shoes or cutlery, be it through books or lipstick. In addition to the acting performance of the leading actress, the use of a 1930s aesthetic and a shift in color tones play a role.

criticism

"Claustrophobic, surreal chamber play that makes up for its low budget with its imaginative and suggestive staging."

music

Part of the authentic 1930s feeling is also the music composed by Konstantin Wecker , who also took on the speaking role of Nazi Niedermeyer.
