Anna Thommen (* 1980 in Arlesheim ) is a Swiss filmmaker and director .

Career

After her training and first professional experience as a primary school teacher, she attended the preliminary course at the Basel School of Design and completed her bachelor's degree in video at the HSLU ( Lucerne University of Applied Sciences ) with the film Second me in 2008 . In 2013 the master's degree in film directing at the ZHdK ( Zurich University of the Arts ) followed with the documentary Neuland , which won numerous festival prizes and the like. a. 2013 won the ZFF ( Zurich Film Festival ) Golden Eye . In 2019 her new film Volunteer was released in collaboration with Lorenz Nufer and won a. a. the Basel Film and Media Art Prize.

Anna Thommen's films portray people and life situations that, despite their individual stories, describe social phenomena: The film Second me refers to the virtual world Second Life (2008) and portrays a user in their environment in front of the computer and their avatar online. In Neuland (2013), the filmmaker accompanied pupils in an integration class and their teachers for two years on their way into professional life. The latest film Volunteer (2019) focuses on people from Switzerland who have left their comfort zone and are committed to refugees in the Mediterranean.
