content

Father's garden shows the everyday life of Liechti's parents. You are retired and live in a block of flats in a Swiss city. When the conversation turns to the past, a fundamental conflict is revealed between the petty-bourgeois, religious life of the parents and their son, who was involved in the youth movement and in the cultural scene: "You always rebelled," the mother once said. But also between the parents there are profound differences in their views, interests and ways of life; and the meticulously tended allotment garden that gave the film its title turns out to be the father's escape from the demands of the mother, who would have preferred to travel and withdraw into the world of her books. The patriarchal worldview of her generation is not questioned by her mother either: "Today women are allowed to express their opinions, but the man is in charge and the woman simply arranges herself so that there is no row."

Individual conversations between Peter Liechti and his parents were re-enacted as puppet shows and cut between the documentary passages. The wording, however, corresponds to the interviews that Liechti conducted with his parents in 2010 and 2011.
