Stéphanie Chuat (born 1970 in Lausanne ) is a Swiss actress , film director and screenwriter . As a director she works with Véronique Reymond .

life and work

Stéphanie Chuat studied at the Lausanne Conservatory and at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri (Ticino). With Véronique Reymond, whom she has known since she was eleven, she founded a theater for children and young people , the Switch company. The two actresses worked in the genres of theater , chanson and cinema . From 1999 they made short films such as Berlin Backstage , which was nominated for the Berlin Today Award of the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2004.

The documentary Gymnase du soir, petites histoires, grandes études followed in 2005, followed by Buffo, Buten & Howard in 2009 , a portrait of the American writer and clown Howard Buten. The duo made their first feature film, Das kleine Zimmer , in 2011 , with Michel Bouquet and Florence Loiret Caille in the lead roles. The film was selected for the International Competition of the Locarno Film Festival in 2010 . In 2011 La Petite Chambre received the Swiss Film Award for best film and best screenplay. In 2014, Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond realized a TV series for the Swiss TV station RTS1 À livre ouvert , for which they also wrote the script.

The documentary Les Dames followed in 2018 . Her film Little Sister with Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2020 . Stéphanie Chuat explains why the two Swiss directors chose German actors for this film: “We wanted to open up new horizons by working with non-French speaking actors. We admire the German actors for their physicality and for the fact that they show themselves with very different faces ».

Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond competed with their sister for the first time for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the Berlinale .
