action

The 11-year-old Ben has to move away with his family from his home village, to the next larger town, as it is being relocated due to the lignite mining. In his new school he meets another new boy, 12-year-old Tariq, a refugee boy from Syria.

Ben is an outsider at the new school, while Tariq not only steals the show from him in class, but also on the football field. But the two boys have more in common than they'd like, and they quickly become friends.

The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media granted production funding of 500,000 euros plus project development funding of 35,000 euros, and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW granted 380,000 euros plus distribution funding of 50,000 euros.

The young actors Yoran Leicher and Sobhi Awad play Ben and Tariq. Further roles were cast with Anna König , Andreas Nickl , Anna Böttcher and Petra Nadolny . The shooting took place between August 8 and October 16, 2018 in Cologne and the surrounding area.

At the end of September and beginning of October 2019 it was shown at the Zurich Film Festival , and in November 2019 at the Cottbus Film Festival . reception

From the German Film and Media Review was too far away with the title Valuable provided. The reasoning stated that the jury had the impression that the director might have planned a little too much. So there are some loose threads in the story that are not told to the end. What should be emphasized, however, is the quality of all the trades involved in terms of image design, use of music and above all the acting. The plot is told in a calm and child-friendly manner, quiet moments are endured and given the necessary space, the narrative thread about sport and integration was also successful.

Awards

Too far away was included in the pre-selection of eight children's films for the German Film Award at the beginning of January 2020 , but was not taken into account when the regular nominations were announced. Further awards below.
