Jan-Ole Gerster (* 1978 in Hagen ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Jan-Ole Gerster was born in 1978 in Hagen, Westphalia. After his community service , during which he trained as a paramedic , he moved to Berlin in 2000 and did an internship at the production company X Films . He had called there forty times before they finally invited him for an interview. After half a year of internship, he was Wolfgang Becker's personal assistant on his successful film Good Bye, Lenin! involved.

At the end of 2003 Jan-Ole Gerster began studying directing and screenwriting at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin . During his studies he made several short films and, together with Wolfgang Becker, wrote the screenplay for the Omnibus film Deutschland 09 for its episode Krankes Haus .

In 2010 Jan-Ole Gerster began working on his graduation film, the tragic comedy Oh Boy with Tom Schilling in the lead role. In July 2012, the multi-award-winning work celebrated its premiere at the Munich Film Festival . There Jan-Ole Gerster also won the New German Cinema Award for the best screenplay. Accompanied by numerous very positive reviews, the film was released in German cinemas on November 1, 2012, where it reached more than 300,000 viewers. At the 2013 German Film Awards , Oh Boy won six awards, including those for best feature film, best screenplay and best director.

In 2014 he received a practical scholarship at the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo .

Gerster lives with his partner Friederike Kempter in Berlin . In the summer of 2018, the two had a child together.
