Favorite films
The nominations were announced on March 23, 2012 in the Friedrichstadt-Palast by the Filmakademie board members of the Acting Section Burghart Klaußner , Ulrich Matthes , Christiane Paul and Petra Zieser and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media Bernd Neumann . The press conference moderated by Benjamin Hermann was broadcast live on the Internet. The favorite for the German Film Prize was Christian Petzold's drama Barbara , which was set in 1980 in the GDR and focuses on a doctor (portrayed by Nina Hoss ) who is transferred to a provincial hospital as a punishment. The film, which was awarded the Director's Prize at the Berlinale 2012 , received eight nominations and won a. Include chances in the categories of best feature film, best director and best leading actor ( Ronald Zehrfeld ). Roland Emmerich's historical film Anonymus and Andreas Dresen's family drama Halt auf Frei Track received seven entries each , followed by Tim Fehlbaum's end-of-life thriller Hell (six nominations). Halt on the open track prevailed as the best film and was awarded in three other categories (director, leading actor, supporting actor). The most successful film, however, was Anonymus , which triumphed in six technical categories. David Wnendt's drama Kriegerin received three honors each , while Barbara only received the silver film award in the feature film category.
Criticism from the trade press
The German trade press criticized the missing nomination of Barbara main actress Nina Hoss, according to Peter Zander ( Berliner Morgenpost ) "a small flaw for the 62nd film award ceremony" , which otherwise shows a "constant balance" in the nominations and "a great duel between Petzold and Dresen ” . With the non-consideration of Detlev Buck Rubbeldiekatz and Doris Dörrie's lucky show the German Film Academy, that they are "impressed neither of audience figures for individual nor the reputation colleagues' leave, so Zander, the only in the three nominations by Leander Haussmann's tragicomedy Hotel Lux a " certain Partiality ” suspected. Michael Reis ( die tageszeitung ), on the other hand, criticized the divided tastes of the preselection juries and the film academy: “Between the safe side of a vote for the art of film (Barbara), special effects (Anonymus), well-crafted genre cinema (Hell) and contemporary problem films remains Hardly a prize for innovative, experimental and imperfect cinema that dares to do more than serve the consensus. " Daniel Kothenschulte ( Berliner Zeitung / Frankfurter Rundschau ) reacted in a similar way to the nominations, who complained that the " small " , " outstanding artistic films " how sleeping sickness by Ulrich Köhler , Christoph Hochhäusler's Unter dir die Stadt and Über uns das Space by Jan Schomburg were largely ignored. Tobias Kniebe ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ), on the other hand, criticized the lack of nominations for Doris Dörrie ( Glück ) and Helmut Dietl ( Zettl ), "the show women and men, the rumbling self-promoters" that German films need.
Honorary awards and "Lola Festival"
The cameraman Michael Ballhaus was awarded the honorary prize for outstanding services to German film . Ballhaus had already been honored as best cameraman in the 1970s for his collaboration with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder on The bitter tears of Petra von Kant (1972) and Despair - Eine Reise ins Licht (1978).
The undoped " Bernd Eichinger Prize " was introduced. In memory of the film producer Bernd Eichinger, who died in 2011, it is intended to honor filmmakers who realize productions in the style of Eichinger. The award went to comedian, actor, screenwriter, director and film producer Michael "Bully" Herbig . At the same time, the nominations for documentaries were increased from two to three.
In the run-up to the award ceremony, the Lola Festival took place in Berlin's Astor Film Lounge from April 12 to 15, 2012 , and all of the nominated film productions were shown. As part of the festival, four editions of the Lola Festival series of talks were to take place, in which filmmakers engage in public discussions between screenings. In addition, a “mini film ” advertises the award ceremony on around 1000 cinema screens .
Selection process and funding
Films were taken into account that had a regular commercial exploitation in cinemas between March 1, 2011 and February 28, 2012 and that had a "significant German cultural character" . According to the applicable guidelines, a feature film, children's film or documentary film has a significant German cultural character if it was produced in the German language, if the director or producer is to be attributed to German or to the German cultural group or if a German production company was significantly involved in the financing of the film .
The nominations for the German Film Prize were determined in a two-stage selection process. Three pre-selection commissions for the fields of feature film, documentary film and children's film were formed, which consisted of a total of 33 members. The majority of the participants consisted of 28 members of the German Film Academy, followed by four representatives from the Committee for Culture and Media of the German Bundestag and an external member with industry experience. A total of 43 German theatrical films were pre-selected (26 feature films, twelve documentaries and five children's films). The pre-selected films were announced in early January.
After the film The Great Dream had received nominations in this way last year , including in the category Best Film , in 2012 the producers of 24 films registered their works for the “wild card” procedure. This means that films that were not included in the official preselection will still be included in the nomination process for all categories with special identification. In 2012, they included a very hot number by Markus Goller , Glück by Doris Dörrie , Sommer der Gaukler and Sommer in Orange by Marcus H. Rosenmüller , What a Man by Matthias Schweighöfer and Zettl by Helmut Dietl . As the only success from the process, Wintertampoo received a nomination in the category “Best Full-Program Children's Film”.
As part of the German Cinema - LOLA @ Berlinale series , the pre-selected films were shown at the 2012 Berlinale. The German Film Academy, which has 1,352 members and also votes on the award winners, determined the nominees from the preselected films and those submitted in the wild card process.
With 2.955 million euros, the German Film Prize is Germany's most highly endowed cultural award. There are also awards for nominations in the film categories. In the event of a win, the nomination bonus will be offset against the prize money, i. H. the best full-length feature film ( Lola in Gold) receives the nomination bonus of 250,000 euros and the same amount for victory.
