background

Set of the film Five Friends on the Darß , summer 2011

The film was produced by SamFilm from Munich . Sebastian Wehlings and Peer Klehmet wrote the script . It was based on motifs from Five Friends Exploring Treasure Island and Five Friends on the Rock Island and thus shows similarities to the implementation of the first story of the series adaptation of the Five Friends from the 1970s. Just like in this one, the children get to know each other in an adventure based on Five Friends on the Rock Island , whereby the film adaptation of the series is more oriented towards the book. The actual adventure of Five Friends Exploring Treasure Island later served as the base for Five Friends 3 .

In mid-May 2011, the first preparations began for the shoot in Schleswig on the Holm there . A vanguard of the film team moved into the premises of the Schleswiger Freiheit as a production office. Furthermore, assistants for film production were recruited in the regional area. In addition, the film was shot on a steep coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , on the Darß , as well as subsequently in Bavaria . The film was shortlisted for the German Film Prize (2012) before it even opened in theaters . Five Friends premiered in Munich on January 22nd and hit German cinemas on January 26th, 2012. On January 28th, there was also a North German premiere in Schleswig ( also known as the Schleswig premiere), to which all 200 extras were invited.

Marcus Harris , who played Julian from the 1970s film adaptation of the series Five Friends, made a cameo as a concierge in the film . The child actors were doubled in some scenes , as the daily shooting time for children is limited to a few hours.

The film comes in the rental of Constantin Film in German cinemas. Since the film was shot in three different federal states, it received corresponding film funding from these countries.

Along with the film, the film book, which is based on the script of the film, and a radio play about the film, which is produced by radio play production Europe, were also released.

The film had around 173,000 admissions by the end of January 2012, and in June 2012 the mark of one million viewers was exceeded.

Reviews

  • Kino.de describes the film as "carefully modernized", "the good, old-fashioned charm has been retained". “The spirit of Enid Blyton's originals” is preserved, “five to twelve year old boys and girls can identify very well [with the film]”.
  • Cinefacts describes the characters as "drawn as serious and interesting characters". The film is "exciting, funny and refreshingly contemporary".
  • Moviemaze.de thinks that "the product falls short of expectations". The action "remains (too) simple and child-friendly conflict-free", which creates little tension. There is "a [...] flood of stupid, dumb characters". “The nostalgia trip [turns] into a fun tour at times”.

On April 10, 2012, the film distributor Constantin Film announced a sequel, Five Friends 2 . The shooting took place in the summer of 2012 and the film was released on January 31, 2013.
