Westwind is a German feature film directed by Robert Thalheim from 2011.

action

The plot of the film is based on a true story. The (dizygoti) twins Doreen and Isabel, two rowers from the GDR , travel to a pioneer camp on Lake Balaton in Hungary in the summer of 1988 . On the way they get to know the two West Germans Nico and Arne. Doreen and Arne fall in love, and in order to be able to stay together, the friends Arne and Nico as well as Doreen and Isabel consider how the twins can illegally leave the country westwards with the help of the VW Beetle. It is planned that both of them will be smuggled into the west one after the other behind the back seat. Isabel decides against it and stays in the east, while Doreen manages to escape.

background

Westwind was after Netto and At the End Tourists Come Robert Thalheim's third feature film . The idea for the film came up in the summer of 2007 during a conversation between Thalheim, the author friend Ilja Haller , the later co-producer and screenwriter Susann Schimk and her twin sister Doreen. The sisters reported a similar fate as the protagonists of the film, only that they were handball players. Haller then conducted a few interviews with them and in 2008 a first draft of the script was available. Filming only began two years later. The casting turned out to be very time-consuming, as the actresses of the twins had to match. In addition, there were financing problems at first, but they could be resolved. The film was shot at Lake Balaton, in Berlin and in a village in the new federal states. Filming took a total of six weeks. The leading actress Friederike Becht received rowing lessons from a former GDR Olympic trainer. The film was finally released in German cinemas on August 25, 2011.

reception

Westwind was shortlisted for the German Film Award 2012 .

The film had mostly positive reviews. The performance of the young actors was particularly appreciated. Rainer Gansera von der Süddeutsche wrote: Frederike Becht and Luise Heyer play the Doreen-Isabel duo with gorgeous charm in their first feature film leading roles . He also praised the atmosphere and emotional intensity of the film and that Thalheim avoids the clichés of East-West stories .

Peter Zander from Die Welt judged Westwind to be a haunting film about the division of Germany, which gets by without any political dogmas and tells its love story calmly and genuinely . It is a small, and precisely because of that, a great film . Only the end of the film at a dramatically decisive turning point is critical.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
